Animal scientist and ruminant nutritionist Dr. Kathy Soder has decades of experience raising sheep in Pennsylvania and Montana. With husband Ken and son Nathan, Kathy runs 125 production Dorset ewes on 96 acres, employing cutting edge science (such as laparoscopic artificial insemination), time-honored practices (choosing site-adapted sheep to boost profitability), and "the Furry Mafia" (livestock guardian dogs).
Recently Kathy spoke with me as part of ATTRA’s ongoing podcast series on women raising sheep called, appropriately, She's Raising Sheep. The podcasts will soon be up on the NCAT playlist. To access even more of Kathy's great information, check out the attached pdf that details the whys and hows of Kathy's successful sheep operation!
